Will Smith & Tom Heal crossed the finish line of the Atlantic Ocean Rowing Race @ 13.49 on the 25th March 2010 making them the youngest pair to have rowed the Atlantic Ocean and indeed ANY ocean.
The records breakeing "Atlantic Row YT" beat the record held by Jamie Facer-Childs and James Thysse who rowed accross the Indian Ocean in 2009 onboard Southern Cross.
James & Jamie had a combined age of 16,123 days at the start of the Indian Ocean Rowing Race 2009 and Tom & Will had a combined age of 16,014 days at the start of the Atlantic Rowing Race 2009/10. A staggering 109 days difference!
Tom & Will were welcomed by a 140ft yacht, put on by their sponsors, Heritage Oil. She had both of their families onboad to shower them in champagne and congratulate them on their huge achievement.
Whilst rowing, Tom & Will entertained us all with blogs containing the thrill of surfing 13.5ft waves, they mourning of the loss of their 125lb fishing line (whilst attached to a fish with a javelin (?!!!)), meeting a pod of over 50 dolphins and coming face to face with 3 VERY large ships. One of these ship was 333ft long and had a draft of 24ft - Hertitage Explorer is only 23ft long! A close shave when the passed just 1/2 mile apart!
A massive Well Done to Tom & Will on achieving their 80 day crossing and ultimately acheiving the "YT" title in their team name - YOUNGEST TEAM!
